Smoking is contributory factor for infertility and problems throughout pregnancy. There is no question that smoking harms sexual and reproductive health in both men and women. Smoking can make it harder for a couple to get pregnant and smoking while pregnant can have serious consequences for both you and your baby.

There is conclusive evidence to show that smoking causes sperm damage, delayed conception, fertility, placental complications, premature rupture of the membranes, premature baby, low weight baby, perintal death. Secondary smoke around babies causes cot death, respiratory illness and contributes to the development of asthma.

There is also substantial evidence to show that smoking causes male sexual impotence, reduced semen quality, reduced repsonse to fertility treatment, ectopic pregnancy,miscarrigae and that babies born to mothers who smoke are less likely to breastfeed and to breastfeed for a shorter time.

This evidence was produced as part of a comprehensive report on reproductive health by the British Medical Association published in 2004 and is a powerful antidote to smoking during pre and post natally.

The good news is that giving up smoking reduces or eliminates many of the risks associated with fertility and pregnancy immediately after stopping.
